HI Pets is committed to providing pet owners in Hawaii with high-quality, competitive and affordable veterinary services. We implement this "caring and compassionate commitment to Hawaii pets" by partnering with Poi Dogs and Popoki (PDP) - Oahu’s premier animal welfare nonprofit. HI Pets serves our kama’aina, military and international families with the same care we’d give to our own ohana.

JOB SUMMARY

The Lead Veterinary Technician is responsible for daily care of all patients in the hospital. They are responsible for running diagnostics, providing treatments, and discharging patients according to the attending veterinarian. They also act as floaters to help other staff members when help is needed. They have proficient knowledge in veterinary medicine.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Working with Chief Veterinarian and other DVMs to train other technicians and vet assists
  • Triage patients, especially when emergency is involved
  • Check in a client/patient into a room in a polite, compassionate manner
  • Take vitals (Wt, T, P, R) and thorough, accurate history
  • Go over estimates/treatment plans with clients, and able to explain treatments, tests, and other procedures
  • Run diagnostics (in-house bloodwork, xrays, urinalysis etc.)
  • Provide treatments as instructed by the attending veterinarian (giving injections, filling meds etc)
  • Monitor pets that are under sedation with a clear idea of abnormal parameters
  • Release patients with thorough instructions -- going over medications (warnings/side effects), when to come back/recheck etc.)
  • Communicate in an effective and professional manner with the public, trainees, and all staff members.
  • Represent the clinic in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
  • Follow all written and verbally communicated standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in training veterinary assistants and new staff members to utilize our patient care protocols.
  • Respond appropriately during an emergency, take directions from the veterinarian and direct others during the event, and maintain professional demeanor during emergency situations
  • Glove in sterilely, maintain sterility and assist doctor with surgery, as needed.
  • Receive and respond to medical calls with veterinarian involvement, as needed.
  • Effectively “team lead,” displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members.
  • Efficiently run a clinic team and maintain appointment and surgical flow.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area
  • All other duties, as assigned by Veterinarian.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

Education:

  • 2 years of progressively responsible veterinary technician work experience.
  • Current registered veterinary technician (RVT) preferred or ability to become registered. should be highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills:

  • Know basic veterinary medical concepts, including but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks.
  • Communicate basic veterinary concepts to owners and be able to repeat information relayed by a veterinarian.
  • Proficient in math (for example: able to make up a fluid bag that has 5% dextrose with 30mEq KCl/1L etc.
  • Communicate with the public on a daily basis in a professional manner.

Animal Handling:

  • Handle up to 30 animals a day for wellness and surgical needs.
  • Know characteristics of animal behavior (for example: be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior).
  • Use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals; the use of safety equipment is mandatory.
  • Identify own limitations and be willing to ask for help.
  • Proficient at animal restraint for various procedures.

Abilities:

  • Able to work standing or sitting for 8 or more hours.
  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day with help.
  • Able to bend and kneel repeatedly.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position works in an air-conditioned clinic setting

WORK SCHEDULE

  • This position is non-exempt (eligible for overtime) and will often including a weekend day. Schedule can include working some holidays or overtime depending on clinic needs. 4-day work week. However, candidate must be flexible with schedule changes and short notice overtime requests.

Pay: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour
